We’re Working to make Southern Utah great!
Spectrum Media doesn't just cover our community; we're a part of it. That's why we believe the role of The Spectrum involves more than reporting the news.
Spectrum Media annually provides thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours of volunteer time to assist needy families and nonprofit organizations through two main channels:
Gannett Foundation: A philanthropic foundation sponsored by USA TODAY NETWORK, the Gannett Foundation supports non-profit activities in Southern and other communities in which USA TODAY NETWORK does business. In 2012, the Gannett Foundation made grants and matching employee donations to non-profits for a total of $6.9 million.
Make A Difference Day: Millions of people and many businesses come together on the fourth Saturday in October to participate in Make A Difference Day. It is the largest national day of helping others and is sponsored by Gannett’s USA WEEKEND and its carrier newspapers, including The Spectrum. We partnered with the Erin Kimball Foundation in 2013, the VA Home in Ivins in 2012 and 2011, and encouraged area residents to get up off the couch and support these organizations by attending the fund raisers we organized for them. These were events that everyone can be a part of, bringing our community together with a common goal.
A key element is getting the word out and getting the whole community involved. In preparation, Spectrum Media initiated donation collections during the entire month of October. The end result was that several community members donated items for the auctions or sales, and several attended each of the fund raisers, and in the process we raised enough to sponsor 3 rooms at the VA home, and close to $8,000 for the Erin Kimball Foundation. We are heartily encouraged by our success, and we will continue to choose a local charity every year to support their cause through the “Make a Difference Day.”.
